Reaching New Heights with Content Marketing

The way we absorb and consume information has changed drastically over the past few years.

We no longer have computers. We have smartphones — and on our smartphones, we have all the entertainment that we need. It’s how we plug ourselves into the digital world. It’s how we stay connected with others. We have shorter attention spans as consumers. We live in a world where Instagram, Vine and Snapchat is how we intake our daily dose of entertainment, ten seconds at a time.

This carries over into the way we do business. If we think in terms of marketing, and how our consumers and readers digest information, we can think about the ways in which we can better appeal to them. This is where content marketing comes into play.

What is Content Marketing?

It’s important to understand the concept itself before digging deep into strategy. The Content Marketing Institute (yes, surprisingly enough, there is an institute) defines content marketing as:

“Content marketing is a marketing technique of creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and acquire a clearly defined audience – with the objective of driving profitable customer action.”

They also note that content marketing is essentially “the art of communicating with your customers and prospects without selling.” The radio and television spots that we’re all familiar with don’t quite work as effectively in today’s world. There are, of course, exceptions, but the audience/consumer/reader doesn’t want to be interrupted. These types of ads are interested in capturing people’s attentions for a short period of time. The goal of content marketing, however, is providing valuable and necessary information.

How Does Content Marketing Do This?

The average consumer isn’t interested in being interrupted by something that doesn’t offer than anything valuable in exchange. They want something appealing in exchange for their time. It’s important to think about your consumer by thinking like your consumer. Who are you attempting to reach? What does this ideal audience want to know? What social media platforms do they use? It’s crucial to think about your audience because that ties into how you are delivering your information. In other words, you can’t market properly without knowing who you are marketing to. There are a number of ways in which content marketing caters to those needs.

  • Blogs or videos that educate the clients
  • Multimedia formats
  • Creating viral content on social media platforms

Conclusion

There are many websites that have a good understanding at the way in which consumers want to consume information. Teehan+Lax, for instance, devoted their entire company to that idea. It’s about finding new ways that are attractive in which you can present information. So, you should be thinking about the ways in which you can attract a very clear audience with very clear material — something that speaks to them individually. The world is constantly evolving and changing. There are news ways of staying ahead of the curve and in our society it’s crucial that you aren’t left behind.
